Veronica Matiz
Artwork Description
Veronica Matiz holds a master's degree in visual arts with an emphasis on plastic arts from Universidad Javeriana. She initially pursued painting but transitioned to sculpture, discovering the ability to render her art three-dimensional by working with compressed cardboard. Though she originally envisioned herself as an abstract painter, Matiz returned to Colombia and enrolled in the Visual Arts program at Javeriana University in Bogotá. In her third semester, Matiz encountered the works of American artists Richard Serra and Frank Gehry, as well as Colombian artists Eduardo Ramírez Villamizar and Édgar Negret. Inspired by their creations, she embarked on a path of sculptural exploration that continues to evolve. During this time, she developed a profound affinity for materials, further honed through workshops at the School of Arts and Crafts in Bogotá. Matiz is interested in exploring tensions between nature, materials, and techniques, juxtaposing organic forms with industrial elements, femininity with masculinity, flexibility with rigidity, and dynamics with stasis. Her aim is to achieve harmony, beauty, and intimacy through these contrasts. She recently participated in one of Europe's largest contemporary art exhibitions, Nordart, held in Büdelsdorf, Germany. Matiz currently resides and works in Bogotá, Colombia.
