​María Elena Naveillan (b. 1964, Santiago, Chile) is a distinguished visual artist whose work delves into the intricate relationship between symbols, language, and human communication. A graduate in Art with a specialization in painting from the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, Naveillan has showcased her art in numerous solo and group exhibitions both domestically and internationally. ​ Universidad de los Andes Her artistic journey spans a diverse range, from figurative to conceptual and neopop expressions, utilizing mediums that vary from paintings and volumetric works to installations crafted with recycled materials. Central to her oeuvre is an exploration of symbols and their evolution across different cultures and epochs. Naveillan is particularly captivated by the superimposition of signs, which she intricately weaves into her pieces through techniques like layering, mixed media, and, more recently, volumetric elements. ​ In her recent works, Naveillan has been investigating the visual impact of letters and alphabets from various civilizations, reflecting on their role in the formation and progression of human interaction. Her installations often incorporate letters from newspapers, ancient manuscripts, and diverse typographies, symbolizing the vastness of information in our globalized era. Notably, her exhibition "Verbum" featured a suspended sphere composed of letters from different scripts, emphasizing the universality and transformative power of language.
